WREXHAM SAUSAGE CHAMPION REVEALED

This year’s Wrexham Champion Sausage Competition has been won by Lewis’s Farm Shop from Eyton after their traditional pork sausage beat off competition from butchers across the county.

Following the format of last year’s inaugural competition, the judging took place during Wrexham’s St David’s Day Celebration weekend and the results were announced by expert sausage judge Dennis Elliott, with prizes being presented by celebrity chef Bryn Williams.

The winning entrant was Mark Lewis from Lewis’s Farm Shop who said: “I am delighted to have won the title of Wrexham Champion Sausage 2009. This is the third Gold Standard award we have won with this type of sausage and I am so glad and proud to have achieved the hat-trick here in Wrexham.”

The reserve Champion was Huw John Jones Butchers from the Butchers’ Market in Wrexham town centre, with Jones Brothers’ Farm Shop from Stansty placing third. All three achieved the ultimate Gold Standard, but the standard was so high that a further two butchers also achieved gold while the other entrants all merited a Silver Award.

Dennis Elliott described the standard of entries as outstanding and went on to say “Wrexham should be extremely proud of the skills of their local butchers when it comes to sausage-making. The high number of Gold Standard awards earned here shows that Wrexham is truly a centre of sausage excellence.”

The event was organised by the Economic Development Department of Wrexham County Borough Council. Organisers are now looking at extending next year’s competition to have one traditional pork category and another category for different meat and flavour combinations.
