Wolverhampton butcher is Champion of Champions

The UK’s number one sausage has been revealed as Michael Bachyk’s Traditional Pork Sausage, at a prestigious championship event yesterday.

Butchers from across the UK travelled to London’s famous Butchers Hall near Smithfield Market to take part in the ultimate sausage competition – Champion of Champions.

Organised by Meat Trades Journal, Champion of Champions takes award-winning sausages from around the UK and pitches them against each other in a bid to discover the ultimate champion sausage. This year’s winner, Michael Bachyk of Michael Kirk in Wolverhampton, triumphed against some tough competition from 27 other award-winning butchers.

The winning entry, Michael’s Traditional Pork Sausage, was praised by judges for its outstanding quality.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: “The standard of entries into the competition were superb and judges had a tough job to decide the winner. In the end however, Michael’s sausage stood out from the pack with its winning characteristics of top quality ingredients and great taste.”

Michael Bachyk was presented with his trophy by cricketing legend and sausage fan, Phil Tufnell. Michael said: “Winning this accolade is fantastic. It will be a good boost for the staff and everyone who put in effort to bring the company forward.”

Champion of Champions, which has been running since 1984, this year marks the launch of British Sausage Week, which runs until 21 October. The week will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and will feature a host of sausage themed events fronted by Tufnell, who will be touring the UK throughout the week.
