Supreme sausages by a Leamington butcher earned him the title of winner of the Birthday Banger competition, to mark the tenth British Sausage Week.

Michael McFerran, of Warwick Street butchers Aubury Allen, was crowned regional winner for his pork, sage and black pepper sausage which judges deemed “delicious and cooked to perfection”.

Cricketer Phil Tufnell presented Mr McFerran with his £150 prize which he donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

He said: “I was really surprised and delighted to win and I’m proud to be representing Leamington in the competition.

“I never imagined I’d get this far when I submitted my entry a few weeks ago but we obviously know how to make winning sausages.

“It was great to meet Phil and be a part of the celebrations – I’ve had a fantastic time.”

Mr McFerran will now go forward to the national finals later this year.

Organised by The British Sausage Appreciation Society, British Sausage Week runs from October 15 until 21 to celebrate the taste, quality and variety of sausages.
