WANTED – SAUSAGE EXPERT EXTRAORDINAIRE

Are you zealous about your sausages? Do you love a Lincolnshire, or crave a Cumberland ? Well this might just be the perfect job for you.  The organisers behind British Sausage Week, today announced a vacancy for a ‘Senior Sausage Selector’.

The qualified candidate will play a significate role in this year’s British Sausage Week, which kicks off on Monday 31 October.  The applicant will become one of the judges to taste the 500 plus sausages entered into the butchers’ competition each year, all vying to be crowned Britain’s Best Banger.

The new judge will join the British Sausage Week hall of fame alongside previous judges and famous sausage fans including Michel Roux Jr, Al Murray The Pub Landlord, Noddy Holder, Craig Revel Horwood and Paul Daniels.

Responsibilities as part of the role include:

  • Handling raw sausages to assess their weight and turgidity

  • Assessing the colour and texture of sausages
  • Tasting and sampling the cooked sausages to assess their meat to herb ratio and pleasure on the palette

All candidates will be asked, as part of their interview, to describe their experience of sausages, their favourite sausage dish, their position on pricking sausages before cooking and the impact of choosing ketchup over brown sauce or no need for added sauce, on the flavour profile of a sausage sandwich.

  • Be passionate about sausages and be a proud British Sausage Week ambassador

Interviewing the applicants will be Master Butcher Keith Fisher, who has presided over the British Sausage Week competition for the last nineteen years. As a veteran judge on the panel, his knowledge of sausages is unsurpassable. Not only has he munched his way through over 4,000 sausages in the 19 years the competition has been going, but his taste buds are so valuable they’re insured for £1 million.

Sausage virtuoso Keith, who has been working in the industry for over 40 years, trained at the temple of the trade, London’s Smithfield College and market, where meat has been sold since the 10th century.  As a fourth generation butcher, Keith’s family is considered butchery royalty and his Great Grandfather was awarded his ‘slaughtering license for the military’ by Queen Victoria herself!

Commenting on the quest to find the country’s number one sausage lover, Keith Fisher reveals what he is looking for in the new judge: “If you know your Cumberland from your Lincolnshire and live, breathe and dream sausages then this is the role for you!

“British Sausage Week is a fantastic celebration of the good old British banger with over 400 sausages to taste and judge (although you won’t have to try all of them!). The successful applicant will get a real insider’s look into the competition and the chance to sample the tastiest sausages from across Great Britain.”

The tastiest food event, now in its 19th year, British Sausage Week 2016 sizzles into action on Monday 31st of October. It is organised by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and celebrates the taste, quality and diversity of pork sausages available today. The campaign celebrates local butchers, producers and retailers across the country through the nationwide competition

This year British Sausage Week 2016 is encouraging people to ‘celebrate the sausage’ with their bangers and create some delicious recipes using quality British sausages! With more than 500 varieties to choose from, sausages are made from fresh quality pork and packed with flavour. They are a quick, easy and tasty option for a mid-week meal and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.
