Thurston Butchers win gold for marmite and cheddar bangers

The 21 year-old from Elmswell has just won the gold award for his sausages at the Newark Show in Nottingham.

It was the second year running that the butchers on School Road have scooped gold for their homemade bangers at the national competition.

“We asked our customers to enter their ideas for new sausage recipes,” he explained. “Someone suggested adding marmite and cheese which turned out to taste really nice, and its now one of our best sellers.”

Mr Francis did everything himself from mixing the ingredients to preparing the right fat/lean ratio of pork for each batch, and says the competition was “a great learning experience.” The young butcher also had to cook 1lb of each of the sausages to a perfect standard, with points being deducted for skins splitting, loss of weight and shrinkage.

“Harvey has been making the majority of the sausages in our butchers for the past 18 months and he felt he wanted to take on the challenge himself this year”, said the butcher’s manager, Alastair Angus. “I’m incredibly proud of what he’s achieved at such a young age, given the toughness of the competition.”

Gold awards were also given to Thurston Butchers for their classic pork sausage, and woolpit sausage, which is seasoned with nutmeg.
