The search for beer

Sausages are a truly versatile food, perfect for any meal. But what drink is best to have with sausages? Option seems to be divided on this and it does, of course, vary according to the sausages in question.

As well as hunting for the best sausages in the UK I am always constantly looking for new ways to enjoy sausages, cooking methods, drinks, accompaniments etc.  Recently I found some excellent beer to drink with sausages.

‘Butty Bach’ is Welsh for ‘little friend’. This full-bodied, smooth and satisfying premium ale is burnished gold in colour. Brewed using Maris Otter and Crystal malts, flaked barley, malted wheat, and locally grown Fuggles, Goldings and Bramling Cross hops. With such fine ingredients it is little wonder this is perfect with sausages.

The fields of barley ripening in the sunshine; the hops climbing up the bines in late summer… It was sights like these that inspired Dorothy to create her Country Ale. Made with all-natural ingredients, it’s a must for any discerning drinker who savours the summer and cares about the countryside.
This strong, full-bodied ruby ale can be enjoyed on its own but we enjoyed it best with some strong venison sausages.

Thumbing through her grandfather’s books, Dorothy came upon a recipe for a wonderful stout with intense roasted barley flavours and a dry, bitter finish. Together with her friend Jimmy, the head brewer at Wye Valley Brewery, she created this dark, full-bodied number. It boasts roasted coffee notes and plenty of hop flavour. As well as many awards, it’s only the second beer to gain top beer writer Roger Protz’s full five star rating. We tried this with strong pork and leek and it worked well.

Nothing gives Dorothy more pleasure than the succulent aroma of the two finest English hop varieties, Goldings and Fuggles. She selected these and Maris Otter pale malt for her Golden Ale as they’re naturally a winning combination. The result is a crisp and zesty beer that is as comfortable served on its own or with any quality pork sausages.

Wye Valley Brewery is a friendly, family-run brewery that cares about real ales, real pubs and real people. I met them first at the Ludlow Food Festival and it was love at first sight!
