Sizzling sausage makers’ local links

And they are putting their money where their mouth is with plans to expand the business in the South Yorkshire area.

Fresh from double success at the Food Services annual awards, Rotherham catering meat suppliers Underwood Meats Company has reaffirmed its commitment to local people and produce.

In a bid to capitalise on the growing gourmet sausage market, joint owners John Heeley and Toby Bennett have opened a factory in nearby Chesterfield dedicated to the production of the humble banger.

Underwood Meats now employs 170 people – the majority of whom are from South Yorkshire. The firm, which sells meat to big-name clients such as the Greene King pubs chain, has also branched out into the world of retail.

John said: “We’ve been a local business for over 40 years but around three years ago we decided we really wanted to improve the quality of our sausage.

“We’ve gone from producing between four and five to 15 tonnes of sausage a week.”

The pair, who scooped best flavour for their pork and chorizo flavoured snack from industry organisation BPEX, are constantly looking for new flavours to develop.

They say they use ingredients from South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire wherever possible.

John said: “We want to show off the high quality food in this area.”
