Sausages and beer as Crawley celebrates 40 years as Dorsten’s twin town

A CELEBRATION of English and German passions from vintage sports cars to Bavarian sausages brought down the curtain on festivities to mark the 40th anniversary of Crawley’s twinning with Dorsten.

In 1973 Crawley signed a twinning agreement with the German town, which is north of Dortmund and Dusseldorf.

To mark the anniversary 35 members of the Dorsten Town Twinning Association made a week-long trip to Crawley.

Our German guests were taken on trips to Brighton, Windsor and the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Chichester.

They were also shown some much-loved beauty spots closer to home, including Tilgate Park and Buchan Country Park.

Iain Millar, chairman of Crawley Town Twinning Association, said: “Our German friends loved getting a taste of our English traditions and culture.

“While on our day trip to Rottingdean, the marina and Brighton we treated our guests to a fish and chip lunch which they all loved.

“Then before exploring the castle in Windsor we had a pub lunch which again went down a storm. Trying our food is one of the main reasons they came.

“The link between Crawley and Dorsten first came about to improve relations between the countries and they were paired due to both being new towns of a similar size.
