Sausage of the year contest

THE hunt is on for the West Midland’s finest sausages with butchers and food producers in the Vale being asked to get involved.

The West Midlands Tastiest Sausage Competition is organised by Heart of England fine foods (HEFF) and has been running since 2001.

Two categories are up for grabs in the contest. The first is the West Midlands Tastiest Breakfast Sausage Award for a mildly spiced sausage suitable for use in a traditional English breakfast. The other is the West Midlands Tastiest Speciality award for sausages with additional flavours.

Entries will be judged at a number of sizzle offs’ at various venues across the county throughout January. Judges will include Sarah Falkland and Kay Alexander from BBC Midlands Today, editor of the Worcester News Kevin Ward and Birmingham Post food critic, Paul Fulford. The winners in each category will go to a grand final at The Mailbox in Birmingham on January 24.

Neal Harris, of HEFF said: “Over the last seven years, competition for the prestigious title of the West Midlands Tastiest Sausage has got hotter and we anticipate record entries this year.

“The range of recipes and ingredients never fails to impress with entrants looking for a new twist on this old British food favourite and to prove their banger really is the best.”
