Pendle sausages are best in Britain

BRITAIN’s best bangers are on the menu at a Fence pub.

Kevin Berkins, owner of the Fence Gate Inn, was presented with four gold awards for his home-made sausages at the British Pig Executive’s national awards ceremony at the Butchers’ Guild Hall in London’s Smithfields – an area historically synonymous with the meat trade.

Former butcher Kevin has been serving up traditional home-cooked food at his pub for more than 20 years, and has racked up countless awards.

BPEX judges handed over top accolades to the Fence Gate Inn for sausages submitted in four categories – the cracked black pepper and chopped chive sausage came top in the speciality pork sausage section, Mrs Kirkham’s “smokey taste of Lancashire” sausage won the best pub sausage award, the plain organic breakfast pork sausage scooped the traditional pork sausage gold award and best reduced fat or reduced sausage went to Kevin’s leek and sage creation.

“We were up against butchers for these awards, and we’re in a unique situation as there aren’t many caterers doing what we do – which is really the biggest thing for us”, said Kevin.
