Northampton caff wins Britain’s Best title

A cafe that prides itself on serving the perfect fry-up has brought home the bacon. . .and been officially crowned as Britain’s best cafe.

The Giggling Sausage, on London Road, Far Cotton, Northampton, fought off competition from around the country to be named Britain’s Best Cafe in the competition, sponsored by Roofshop.

It got more than 1,000 votes – beating all the other cafes in the competition.

Manager Sophie Dane said: “We’re ecstatic, we are so happy. We think it’s just fabulous that the customers appreciate it.

“I think it’s because the staff are always helpful and friendly and we serve good food. We do a variety of breakfasts and traditional meals like steak and kidney pie. We have healthy options as well.

“We have a lot of returning customers from all walks of life – families, roofers and scaffolders, people from abroad that come to England and always make a point of coming here. The judge talked about the outstanding number of votes and he personally read the votes and a lot of it was because we’re a good team. We’re friendly and always helpful.”

The cafe’s top-selling meal is its Full Monty breakfast, which costs £4.50 for an egg, two sausages, two rashers of bacon, fried bread, hash browns, beans, tomatoes, bread and butter and a cup of tea.

Along with a holiday voucher, the Giggling Sausage – which has been open since 1969 – won a framed certificate which is displayed for all customers to see. Sister cafe Super Sausage, on Letts Road, was also nominated.

Regular customer Edward Mackford, aged 65, said: “It’s very nice here, I come in every day and I recommend it.”

Staff picked up the award at a ceremony in Birmingham on Thursday.
