NEW EVIDENCE COULD HELP PROTECT OUR SAUSAGES

New evidence proving Lincolnshire sausages have been made here for centuries could be the key to getting the bangers protected under EU law.

Six references to the county’s iconic bangers have been found in antique recipe and text books – proving the geographical identity of the sausages.

With this final sticking point resolved, the Lincolnshire Sausage Association, which is made up of county butchers, can finally submit its application to Defra – after a three-year Echo campaign.

Once ready, it will be submitted to Defra, and a six-month consultation process will begin.

Kenny Roberts, who runs Elite Meats in Bailgate, Lincoln, said this was fantastic news.

“It’s great to know things are progressing so well,” he said.

“The whole point of this is to make sure that good Lincolnshire butchers produce this product to the highest standards and to stop other people making poor quality products and using the brand we’ve worked so hard to build up.”
