A new mutton sausage to celebrate and support Derbyshire’s sheep farming heritage has been designed by award-winning butchers at Croots Farm Shop.
The mutton, herb and lemon sausage is the first mutton sausage to join the range of bangers created at the farm shop near Duffield.
Mutton is currently enjoying new-found favour after being showcased on the BBC’s Great British Food Revival TV programme recently by Welsh chef Matt Tebbutt. A number of celebrity chefs are backing the meat including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
Now Croots Farm Shop has come up with its own way of marketing mutton with its special Croots Derbyshire sausage made using the meat.
“I’ve been planning to create a special Derbyshire sausage to add to our popular sausage range for ages now, but couldn’t decide what flavour to go for,” said Steve Croot. “We have dozens of sausages in our repertoire now and I was keen for something that was going to be distinct. After hearing about how mutton is undergoing a bit of a revival it suddenly dawned on me that we should go for a mutton sausage. After all, Derbyshire is known for its sheep!”
Croots Derbyshire sausage is being launched on Tuesday April 19th and to mark the occasion there will be 25% off all sausages from then until Saturday April 23rd.
The farm shop, at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, sources the meat for its sausages within a few miles of Croots, and the mutton will be no exception.
“Mutton is a meat that seemed to have lost its popularity, but almost immediately after the Great British Food Revival programme we had customers asking for it at our butchery counter,” said Steve. “It makes perfect sense for our Derbyshire sausage to be made of mutton, and I hope it goes down a treat.”
The butchery counter at Croots has won a string of awards, including 16 awards earlier this year at the BPEX regional roadshow which were judged by industry experts.
Croots has a range of around 40 different flavours of banger, which it sells on a rotating basis. The farm shop recently extended its fresh meat counter in response to demand.

Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen is open Sundays from 10am to 4pm (café until 3.45pm), and from Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (café until 4.30pm). It is closed on Mondays. Please note it will be closed on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday (April 24th and 25th). It will also be closed on Friday April 29th.
