Ledbury butcher’s sausages scoop prize

STAFF at butchers Wallers of Ledbury are celebrating after their sausages won a double whammy in a competition this week.

The bangers were judged the best in both categories of the county heat of this year’s West Midlands Tastiest Sausage competition.

Wallers’ sausages were pitted against others from across Herefordshire in a sizzling cook-off at the Aga dealership of Hill Fuels.

And the Homend-based shop ended up winning both the best breakfast sausage and best speciality sausage categories.

“It’s great to make a clean sweep like this,” said Dave Waller, who founded the business 31 years ago. “Winning two years back-to-back is especially good because there are so many good butchers in Herefordshire.”

Mr Waller said he especially wants to thank employee Rob Merrick, who makes the sausages.

Now Wallers sausages will go on to the grand final in Birmingham next Thursday, January 29, when they will be judges by a panel led by top cookery writer Sophie Grigson.
