It’s a battle of bangers at Echt

The search is on to find the north-east’s best sausages.

Echt Show is appealing for entries from butchers and farm shops for its sausage contest.

It will be judged in the main marquee during the show on July 12 at Echt Pleasure Park in Aberdeenshire.

Last year’s inaugural competition attracted 85 entries from 29 competitors. Organisers hope for a similar number this year.

Show committee member and butcher Paul Smith said there were classes for beef, pork and speciality sausages.

He added: “We’ve had 60 entries so far, but would like more. The only stipulation is that those entering are within a 50-mile radius of the Echt Show park.”

Ron Gray, the Braemar butcher, is to defend the champion sausage-maker title that he won a year ago.

The sausage competition was the only contest to go ahead at the show last year as bad weather forced the cancellation of all other classes at the event.

Anyone wanting to enter should contact Mr Smith, who runs the butcher’s shop at Mason Lodge, Skene, near Aberdeen, on 01224 743288. Entrants have to provide six uncooked sausages and six cooked, all of which have to be delivered to Mr Smith’s shop by 5pm on July 11. Among judges are award-winning sausage-maker Roy Porter, of Clitheroe in Lancashire.
