Hot Dogs in Iceland

I was very excited when I noticed on my twitter feed that my friend and ex-colleague Samuel Bawden was on a trip to Iceland and was sampling the local hot dogs!

Sam and I first met about 14 years ago at University before I had truly found my love of sausages so he’s seen my blog and enthusiasm grow over that time.  Luckily, knowing my keenness to know about sausages all over Europe he let me know about these beauties.

The queue at Baejatins Beztu in Reykjavik was large but what can you expect at a place who apparently serve the best hot dogs in Europe!

According to the Lonely planet guide getting a hotdog here is ranked number 7 out of 298 things to do in Reykjavik.  I don’t have the list but I can imagine that 1-6 have got to be pretty special to top this!

According to the guide: “Icelanders are utterly addicted to hot dogs, and they swear the best are those from Bæjarins Beztu, a van situated near the harbour that’s patronised by Bill Clinton! Use the vital sentence Eina með öllu (‘One with everything’) to get one with mustard, tomato sauce (ketchup), rémoulade and crunchy onions.”

Our man Sam has a nose for it!  Without the aid of a guide he quickly tweeted me back a response to my request for a picture.

“Ate too quickly to take a pic! May go back tomorrow and will picture then! The secret is the fried onions.”

Sounds like he hit the nail on the head and true to his word he popped bak the next day to sample another.

This looks awesome to me and Sam, usually an eloquent and gifted speaker, was reduced to a hashtag.
