Great tasting sausages win three fatstock show awards

Pork and herb sausages from Northfield Farm in Cold Overton have won three awards.

Owner Jan McCourt, a former lawyer and investment banker, who diversified into butchery and making meat products on his cattle farm after being made redundant, said the secret lay in using “quality meat, and simple, traditional, ingredients”.

He added: “There’s always an element of luck, too, so we are very grateful.”

Northfield sausages, made from British Lop pigs, won the best pork sausages award at the Melton Mowbray Christmas Fatstock Show and was named best pork sausage and overall show champion at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Christmas Primestock Show earlier this month.

Mr McCourt said: “When we first started the business in 1997, we had never made sausages before.

“We looked for inspiration and found an old recipe and adapted it. It won a national award that year.”

Sausages made to that winning recipe are handmade at the farm in Whissendine Lane, Cold Overton, and have continued to win awards including a 1* Gold at the ?Great Taste Awards held at Olympia in London in August this year.

Mr McCourt, who bought the farm in 1994, attributed the successes to being a “small business”.

He added: “Although there are challenges in price, sourcing and buying power, as a small business we are able to give our products more attention to detail.”

Northfield Farm has its own farm shop where the award-winning pork and herb sausages are available alongside many other products.
