Flintshire butcher triumphs in bid for Britain’s best banger

A Flintshire butcher is celebrating after taking home the title for the UK’s best sausage.

Stephen Vaughan, owner of A Vaughan butchers in Penyffordd, fought off tough competition from champion sausage makers across the country to claim the prestigious title, Champion of Champions, for his traditional pork banger.

The contest is organised by trade magazine the Meat Trades Journal, and sees award-winning butchers from across the UK battling it out every year to be declared the overall best.

Stephen, who has been a finalist for the award four times before, triumphed against 23 other top sausage recipes to finally claim the honour.

He said: “I have been making this sausage for the past two to three years, and tweaked the recipe for the competition with feedback from our customers.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have won, after being in the final four times already.

“This award is a really big thing to win, so we are all really pleased.”

Ed Bedington, editor of the Meat Trades Journal, said: “Sausages are the cornerstone of a good butcher’s shop, and it’s key to get that right.

“Stephen is a great example of a butcher who puts in the effort to ensure his sausages shine out from the competition.”
