Family butcher scoops award

NEWTYLE butcher James Pirie and Son’s sausages are the boys!

The popular family business has scooped yet another national award.

The results of the 2010 Scottish Beef Sausage Championship have been announced and partner Alan is delighted to have added yet another title to a very long list of accolades.

He explained: “Mystery shoppers visited 10 winners and runners-up who were chosen from a very large entry for the regional competitions held back in May.

“The sausages they purchased were then taken to Braehead Cook School in Kilmarnock where a team of five judges chose the overall Scottish Champions.

South East Scotland Champions, JC Douglas of St Boswells, were crowned overall 2010 Scottish Beef Sausage Champions and James Pirie and Son, representing the East of Scotland, were crowned Scottish Reserve Beef Sausage Champions.

Alan admitted they’re no strangers to winning awards.

They have twice previously been hailed Scottish Champions for both their beef and pork sausages and in 2005 were awarded the Scottish Haggis Championship.

Pirie’s are proud to hold 127 awards for their products, which are all produced in the small country butcher’s shop in the village.

“Customers come from all over the area to our shop where we can offer them 38 different varieties of sausages,” said Alan.
