Champion of Champions 2009

27 October 2009 No Comment

I was delighted to be invited by the Meat Trades Journal to join the panel of judges at this year’s Champion of Champions competition. Sausage makers who have won previous BPEX accredited competitions during the year are then invited to compete for the title of Champion of Champions.

Butchers Hall in London is the prefect venue for an event of such importance and I worked with the three other judges to reduce the 26 entries to 6 to go through to the cook-off.

We were joined at this stage by Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ to cut the final six down to one champion of champions.

After Ed’s speech Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, The Black Farmer, gave an entertaining speech and then gave out the awards before announcing Allan Bennett as the winner for 2009.

The competition was a very hard one to judge and of the 26 entrants you could see why they had all won previous competitions. Allan Bennett is a really nice chap and very deserving winner. I heard him sharing the recipe with one of the other butchers after winning!

The Black Farmer is clearly a man who is passionate about what he believes in and I am looking forward to working with him in the future.
