Butchers are bang on with flavours for British Sausage Week successes

Two sausage makers from Bourne and Gosberton can claim to be among the nation’s top sausage makers after success in a pair of competitions.

Duncan Robinson, who runs Groovy Foods of Stamford Road, Bourne, with his wife Rachael, took third place in the Innovative Pork Sausage category at this year’s BPEX (British Pig Executive) Foodservice Sausage of the Year awards in London.

Groovy Foods was one of 15 finalists with its “Sasquatch Saussage”, a maple-flavoured sausage with double maple-cured bacon and waffles.

Meanwhile, Trevor Sharpe of Sharpe’s Hog Roast, Gosberton, was a finalist at the East Midlands British Sausage Week Great British Banger event in Peterborough where awards were presented by England Rugby World Cup winner Phil Vickery.

Trevor was recognised for his popular Lincolnshire Sausage, made with pork and seasoning, along with both gluten-free and low-fat sausages.

“We came in the top three with our Lincolnshire Sausage which is really fantastic,” Trevor said.

“But we also got a Silver Award for our gluten-free and low-fat sausages which was really good.

“There were about 500 entries and it was so enjoyable to try making different varieties of sausages.

“But when you get good feedback from people about the sausages you’ve made, it makes you want to carry on.”

Groovy Foods was also a finalist at the Great British Banger event with its Voodoo Lollipop Sausage, made with black chilli, rum, black treacle and cajun spices.

Duncan said: “Myself, Rachael and our butcher Shane Leslie are elated and it’s awesome to get recognition for the way we male a living.

“We have worked incredibly hard this year, finding a lot of fresh ingredients and spending hours each week in the kitchen, keeping our recipes full of fresh produce.

“We think extremely carefully about what ingredients will go into our sausages and to keep championing food and free ranger grooviness.”

Tony Goodger, trade manager for BPEX Foodservice, said: “We were overwhelmed by the fantastic selection of quality assured sausages entered for this year’s final, with such a diverse range of flavours varieties.

“Groovy Foods did incredibly well and should be proud of its achievements.”
