Brundish pig farmer is bang-on with sausage recipe

Lane Farm Country Food at Brundish, near Framlingham, scooped the accolade for its pork, apple, apricot and ginger entry in the Best Innovative Sausage Category at the British Sausage Week 2014 awards.

More than 500 different sausages were entered into the annual awards, which celebrate the Great British banger.

The Lane Farm team, which entered two different sausages, was delighted.

“This is a great result,” said Lane Farm owner and pig farmer Ian Whitehead. “All the entries were judged by a panel of high calibre industry professionals who really know their stuff so it’s fantastic news that they rated our pork, apple, apricot and ginger sausage so highly.”

The awards were presented at a special event in the Butchers Hall in London on October 31, where the awards were presented by rugby legend, Phil Vickery, an ex England and Lions player.

“It was a fantastic day for the team,” said Ian. “We really never expected to win so this really is a fantastic achievement to all those involved in creating these winning sausages.

“We’ll have to put our thinking caps on to come up with something new for next year’s competition now.”

The presentation ceremony marked the start of Phil Vickery’s nationwide British Sausage Week tour, during which he recognised and rewarded some of the best butcher’s sausages in the country.

There were two categories for entry in the Multiple Retailer and Branded Sausage competitions – Traditional Pork Sausage and Innovative Pork Sausage.

The gold award in ?the Traditional Pork Sausage category in the Multiple Retailer section was Tesco Finest Lincolnshire Sausage, and the store also took ?the gold award in Innovative Pork Sausage category ?with its Tesco Finest ?Pork, Honey and Fennel Sausage.

Lane Farm shared its award with Eastbrook Farm Organic Meats’ Helen Browning’s Organic Hot Dogs.

Keith Fisher, butchery and product development manager at pig levy payers’ organisation BPEX said: “The standard of quality pork sausages entered into the Multiple Retailer and Branded Manufacturer categories in the British Sausage Week competitions is always impressively high and this year was no different.
