British Sausage Appreciation Society

BSASlogoI was saddened to hear about the demise of The British Sausage Appreciation Society.

The BSAS was a truly great, slightly eccentric, British institution dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Great British Sausage.

The British Sausage Appreciation Society, which had 5,000 members at it’s peak, was founded for sausage enthusiasts nationwide. Its function was to raise awareness and promote delicious tasting, quality British sausages such as those produced under the Red Tractor quality assurance scheme.

I think Sausagefans.co.uk can help to fill the gap!

If you were a British Sausage Appreciation Society member (or if you would have been one given the chance) please can you do two things.

Firstly, please sign up to The Sizzler (see below) which is my way of staying in touch.  I’ll use this newsletter to update you.

Secondly, please leave a comment below telling me what you loved about the BSAS and then I will see what we can do to fill the gap!

  1. Was told about the bsas but am disappointed to find it no longer exists. I’m new to sausage making and eager for tips and recipes.
    Thank you
    Neale

    1. Luckily we also heard about the demise of the BSAS and are bringing it back! Stay tuned so you can get involved!

  2. Given the cahnce, I would have loved to be a member of the BSAS. If you manage to resurrect it, I would join immediately. Go sausages! 🙂

  3. Sausages can be used for all meals can’t think of any where they could not be used

My favourites are for breakfast, toad in the hole, pasta, casserole and Roast.

  4. You can’t beet the British Banger. Hot or Cold.
I used to be a member of the BSAS. Still got the sausage pin badge.
    It’s Great. It’s British it’s a Banger.

  5. All I want are sausages that taste like the ones I had when I was a kid. It’s been like my Holy Grail for the last 50 years! On my travels throughout the UK, I call in many Butchers shops & ask for traditional plain Pork Sausages. Why is it they want to sell me sausages with all sorts in them. If I wanted a Pork & Leek sausage I’d ask for it. My other pet hate is that many are seasoned with pepper. For me, it doesn’t enhance the taste, it ruins it. In some instances they sell traditional ones that are in thick skins & the meat is coarse ground. To me the perfect sausage is about taste & texture. I’m looking for the perfect Pork Sausage that has no additives other than the right amount of traditional binding, finely ground meat & a skin that just about holds it in. And It should need pricking before it goes in the pan. I’m ‘Always looking on the bright side of life’ in the hope of finding it!

    1. I too am on a similar search. No I do not want the sausage of my childhood. they had everything in them except meat it seemed as I was brought up during the war. LOL.I do though want to find a decent breakfast sausage, unlike you Paul though, I like pepper in them. But, it has to be white pepper not the heavy black pepper that makers all seem to use now a days. The best sausage I have found to date is from ‘Porky’ Downes shop in Exmouth Devon. He also makes the illusive Hogs and Groats Puddings which are a taste to remember forever. Sadly I no longer do my monthly trip to Devon and Porky does not post. I must mention also that his Black Puddings are something to die for. My other search is for the perfect Lincolnshire sausage like the ones my Grandad made. the meat has to be rough chopped not a slurry that so many manufacturers use. and the sage must be fresh.

  6. My Great Grandfather was supposed to have invented the Pork Tomato Sausage. My Grandfather and Father were also Pork Butchers
I was also a member of the BSAS and still have the tie and watch

    1. Michael, I’m doing a research paper on the origins of foods. Is there any way you could share with me your great grandfather’s story? I absolutely will site everything you give me, as this is an APA paper for my Associate’s degree. Thank you, regardless!

      1. So sorry Toni but this is the first time (31/12/2022) that I have been back here since my posting. I assume that by now you have completed your dissertation. my e-mail is below should you wish to contact me.

  7. British sausages are a great institution. Bring back the British Sausage Appreciation Society! I have wonderful memories of articles in their newsletters. Moreover we need to restore the availability of decent British sausages throughout the British Isles including both sides of the border in Ireland. Rejoin the European Union

  8. Omg I still have my sausage pin that I wore with pride! My dad is a chef and we loved being part of the club with the little puzzles for us kids and sausage info for the adults!

  9. Stumbled across my old pin from years ago and decided to try and catch up again, am so looking forward to getting up to date

  10. I too recently found my SAS pin, and was curious to see if anything was still happening.
Always loved my pork and beef sausages best, either grilled, baked or on the BBQ. A Sausage Appreciation Society kitchen apron would be fab.

  11. Dear Sausage lovers,

There should never be a vegetable in a sausage. Slap my pig, it should be pure meat in my mouth. How many sausages have you ever tasted?

I am a Law graduate of Sausage law

  12. I could eat sausages every day any time , I class myself as a connoisseur of sausages Ionly buy from fresh
butchers , that are made on the premises

  13. I’d have sausages every day given the chance but I already struggle to fit into my best trousers!

They really are a great British institution and nobody on earth does them as well as us. You just can’t beat a great British banger and I’d like to think I’m a bit of an expert on these lovely meaty treats.

I’ve even got a small sausage tattoo. My friends think I’m bonkers!
