Benson sausages are best of three counties

A BENSON butcher’s sausages have been named the best in Oxfordshire, Hampshire, and Berkshire.

Gary Smith, 43, who has shops in Benson and Wallingford, won a three counties sausage competition held at the Swan Hotel, in Goring. Mr Smith, who has been a butcher for 27 years, won two gold and two silver awards, before his traditional pork sausage was named the best in show.

He said: “The secret is combination of good local ingredients, mixing them and filling them out right.

“We are renowned for making very good sausages.

“We’ve got a dozen different flavours and we sell a lot of them.”

Mr Smith, who grew up in Benson, opened his High Street shop seven years ago, expanding to St Martin’s Street in Wallingford in April.

He said: “I’ve been looking to open in Wallingford for a long time.
